I worked in a gas station in Canada back in 2001 when the price of a liter first broke $1.00. We had to physically stick a 1 up on the electronic sign.
NGL, if you can. start to holmes out the most locally produced food vendors and farms you can find. Shit’s gonna get expensive very quickly. I’m already looking to start to lay up fresh frozen and canned food now, before the cost rises.

While you are right, prices in the countries listed were never cheap to begin with because fuels in Europe are highly taxed.
Also, for the same reason, most European cars are leagues above US ones in terms of fuel efficiency. Fuel was always expensive here, so we started making and purchasing cars that were smaller and more efficient in order to save.
In the US, efficiency was never the goal because with cheap fuel prices, nobody cared if their truck was huge and drank several times what an European car drank to make the same distance.

And given how efficient are US trucks in gas consumption, a gallon is… how much in terms of mileage? 5 miles or so? How much does it cost you with those prices just to go to the gas station to fill up?
Meanwhile EVs are costing that much per 250 miles or so…
I mean, I live in a country with expensive electricity and I can’t charge at home, so prices are even higher because I use the public charge points. Still, I drive around 400km with less than 20€ that’s simply unachievable with an ICE car, let alone and US ICE car.
If I remember right its about 15 MPG for most diesel us trucks. So 15 miles, in real numbers about 24 kms. That is not enough to get me to the nearest city from my house. Like 30 kms to even a tim hortens. That is $10 (usd so more here) just to go to town…
I was exaggerating with the 5 MPG, I didn’t expect it to be so damn low as 15 MPG. That’s… Converting to lt/km that would be around 15lt per 100 kms! Damn… Not sure about average consumptions in Europe, since I drive an electric and never had an ICE but I think the average goes to around 5-6lt per 100km so that’s 3 times as much. Wow…
I have been told that 14 mpgs is really good for a truck (my 1986 c20 does a bit better and its a v8 and carboratred). They are not little guys, and in this part of Canada you have more trucks on the road then just about any other type, most with one person in them and nothing in the back. At least I try to only use my truck when needing to haul yard waste or something to much for my little car, but next door has 3 trucks for 2 people.
7 to 8 Lt per 100km is about normal here (depending on what you drive) in non trucks but for years people here relate success with a big truck.
I guess that’s what happens when you have cheap-ass gas prices. Efficiency is just not needed. Well, if anything, this will help people understand how convenient is an EV. I drive 60km a day for my commute and it costs me 2.4€ of electricity, and that’s considering Italy’s electricity prices are not among the lowest in Europe. With such a beast here, I’d go for around 15-16€ a day. Yeah, not happening ever, lol
Oh it was needed here, but activly pushed into clown world numbers of inefficientcies. We have had cars that are very good on gas, now we have cars that say they are good on gas but use 3x what a car from the past would do. Its all marketing over function now and our auto industry is effectively dead due to it, people are (shocker) not buying enough $100,000 trucks that cost $10 in gas to go to the store.
Well if you are using it for work at least its just a business expense so its easier to justify the cost of something large. For recreational use it would be stupid.
So, I currently have a Chevy Silverado 6.0 liter gas truck. 4 full doors, long bed. I tow a 37ft bumper pull rv with it full time, around 9000lbs loaded. Truck bed is full, maybe another 1200lbs.
I get 7mpg average, and that’s across the country a few times. Unloaded maybe 10mpg. I run up to about 80mph when towing where possible.
My Dodge Ram before it with a 12v Cummins diesel got 14mpg loaded similarly, and about 18-20mpg unloaded (I kept about 500lbs of wood in the bed all the time so it was never really empty).
It’s about $130 to fill up my Chevy right now with current gas prices. We had to do it about six times to move up north this summer for work.
I thought we were having it rough at 2.20 a liter.

It’s inevitable. Obviously this is caused by a political disruption, but oil is a finite resource. People are eventually going to be economically forced to switch to electric, and putting it off for ethnocentrism reasons is just poor policy.

I believe some are also digital, but use, as you said, a fixed decimal place on the road sign, so, in order to show 10.00, yould not only have to shift/ paint over the fixed decimal, the systems would have to be adjusted to $1, which no station owner wants.
