This. Firefox w/ Ublock Origin + SponsorBlock + DeArrow + Enhancer for YouTube on desktop, YouTube Morphe on Android, SmartTubeNext for the TV. I never have to watch a YT ad ever.

Because you insist on using Chrome and can’t install Ublock Origin and Sponsorblock.

    The self-flagellation continues.

Don’t need sponsorblock I think, or maybe I’m just not watching videos where it’s needed. Just ublock origin.

Sponsorblock definitely helps on the in-video ad reads if they’re excessive or irrelevant. Ublock won’t get those.

I’m on my brother’s YT premium.

Realistically its going to be some a small handful of good videos followed by me navigating what seems like an endless ocean of slop, giving up to then stare at my phone and read Lemmy.

I don’t pay for YouTube, and every device in our home from PCs to TVs to our phones don’t have any YouTube ads on them.

If you pay for YouTube, you’re a sucker.

Propably you are either an iphone user, a shallow consumer, an instagram doomscroller or just too old.

Or you use youtube in TV.

      So 90% of the people.

PSA (I honestly don’t know anyone else who does this) the Android version of Firefox supports the uBlock origin extension (among other things) and plays YouTube videos perfectly fine.

I haven’t had to watch a single ad on YouTube on my phone for years and well over a decade on any PC or Mac.

I’m using Firefox with ublock on android and also Firefox klar (as default for links) but for YouTube I use newpipe. No ads but occasional blocking but I really don’t care.

I mean it’s not only ads but the other lists against popups and other annoying stuff too.

Android has a full app replacement. It’s called ReVanced. Use version 20.31.42 rather than the latest, though. The latest has been partially broken by YouTube and freezes often.

There’s also LibreTube and Grayjay, which don’t show ads at all anyway, and also come with a skip button that turns on for in-video sponsor ads / asking you to like and subscribe.

Assuming Android, for me the following worked:

          • Go to app info.
          • Open ‘Set as default’.
          • Turn “Open supported links” off.

Though I’d wager that the above may be variant dependent.

Do you have the ability to Force Stop and Disable it in your app settings?

You should be to copy paste any youtube link into your Firefox browser.

Get an OS that doesn’t fill your phone with unremovable bloat ware. You can also turn off opening links in apps in the Firefox settings, or install NewPipe and make that the default app for YouTube links.

tat seems to have been stopped ? all of a sudden it opening links in the YT app, and bypassing Newpipe, started about 2 weeks ago. I was shocked by the ads. How to change it back ?

I have a Roku tv and I’m using PlayLet app for YouTube. It blocks ads and seems to be integrated with SponsorBlock. I don’t see any ads, but I haven’t tested the SponsorBlock, the videos I watch don’t have sponsored segments.

I do use Firefox (laptop) and NewPipe (phone), but my PS5 is the main device I use for streaming when I want to watch stuff with my girlfriend. No way to block ads on PS5, so I’m telling myself that I do it for the streamers (they gotta eat, too).

Xavier forgot to mention that they’re also for shit you will never buy, and go on and on about their product way too long, and you’ve already heard the pitch 362 times in the past week.

    Edit:

The thing that’s so stupid about all this is that YT had the perfect solution like 16 years ago. For quite a while they had banner ads at the bottom of the videos that you could x out of. That’s how you have to do it on the Internet.

People put up with legacy ads on TV in the 20th Century because that’s the only way it could be done. Trying to force people to go back to that is cheeky as hell.

Banner doesn’t make what it used to on desktop and mobile. Even the hotness that was CTV ads on streaming TVs are starting to decline in performance.

Worth noting creators still have a fair amount of control over their ad setups. They are jamming more ads to make the same amount of money they made 2 years ago with more placements.

Skippable promos for other shows, yes. But importantly, you won’t see ads for like, toilet paper or food or whatever, on the paid tiers (unless someone has a stupid like, “pay less for fewer ads” thing).

Having a loud beginning to the promos for other shows is just as annoying as loud ads for anything else. That fucking Stewart Saves the Universe or what the fuck it is called on HBO playing before everything I watched for weeks made me stop trying to watch anything until it switched to some other show.
