Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you less likely to comment on a bot post?English
151·16 days agoIt used to be worse. We would have three different instances with bots reposting hackernews. One guy hosted an instance entirely for bot posting from different news feeds.
And so many different projects trying (poorly) to mirror reddit content in obnoxious ways.
On the other hand, the bots reposting old comic strips get plenty of discussion and don’t annoy me as much, so not all bots, I guess.

6·18 days agoWhy do people fear downvotes so much? Let people add their votes to whatever is in their feeds.
If you don’t like the downvotes, you can use a sorting algorithm that ignores them. Otherwise, they are a general indicator of how people feel about content on Lemmy, and that’s not entirely useless data
It’s questionable as it is that being banned from a community means you can’t vote on the content at an instance level.
Please tell me useful information how you can be sure your therapist doesn’t suck before you open up to them.
I’m not willing to violate my privacy to an untrusted therapist, which makes the whole process seem like a losing battle. And yes, I know that’s because of my choices.
“Person. Man. Woman. Camera. TV.?”
How does everyone still remember all five of these? I heard most people can’t do that

6·25 days agoIt’s just a reference from Community, it’s not even a serious comment.
But it’s okay, it was ambiguous enough that people don’t pick up on that right away

If I’m being honest, I find this much more adorable, no matter how many teeth he thinks is cute to use
It seems to me the only point of DOGE was so that Trump could direct the savings elsewhere.
Where, do you suppose?

politics @lemmy.world•What exactly does Vladimir Putin hold over the cowardly Donald Trump?English
7·30 days agoThere’s a lot of people mixing up info like this. The “pee tape” refers to something from the original Steele dossier that claimed he had Russian prostitutes pee on a bed that Obama had previously slept in.
Not that the details matter all that much, because it may or may not be true, and I don’t think it would change anything either way.

7·1 month agoIf there were others, she surely would have had more support during the time she lost her empathic powers and didn’t know how to be a therapist anymore
I tend to judge that episode harshly because of the way she reacted, but that would be very disorienting for anyone to suddenly lose a crucial sense they had
I like wireless charging simply because of the stress that charging ports undergo tends to cause them to fail. That alone was enough for me to primarily stick with wireless.
But I also don’t use my phone a lot at home. Generally if my phone is charging, I have access to my desktop PC and prefer to use that for watching videos or browsing news.
It does seem a little condescending in this context. I have known one or two people who don’t “bro” in normal conversation, but once it’s an argument they say it in every retort. It can feel slightly toxic when used this way.
Not as toxic as stalking downvoters though
Let me count the ways it has been for me… Capitalization, using -, not using -, wrong quotes, mismatched quotes, no quotes, reading the command the same wrong way about five times and typing it that way. Well this could take forever to list them all.
I just copy paste first now. That way I learn none of the commands or syntax at all

12·2 months agoCanonically, this job is already automated. It was established early on that a portion of the simpler patterns on the holodeck are fully replicated rather than simulated. When the holodeck shuts down, it selectively reclaims everything that’s not a person.
And if it has an uncontrolled shutdown, it will reclaim everything including the people.
Did you play the BioShock infinite dlc? They had a strange retcon where the Lutece twins approached Fitzroy and instructed her to appear to be a monster, specifically so Elizabeth would feel like she had to kill her.
It was a strange choice, because the remaining revolution was pretty blatantly horrible without her either way, and I’m not entirely sure that’s how this sanitized version of her would want it to go.
The politics of BioShock are not all that deep in the end. They’re mostly just a setting so they can tell a story of someone forced into a role without understanding it
BioShock 2 revealed that Andrew Ryan had a secret prison to throw people into when they disrupted his control over the city. And more than once he decided he would burn it all down rather than let someone else win.
It may have masqueraded as anarchy, but the system was still rigged from the start. There was always a ruler. And power can corrupt even the strongest idealistic convictions
