It is now official that the European continent is experiencing the fastest rate of global warming, according to a new scientific report.

Can’t believe there are idiots that still deny climate change.

Yep. The signs are all around us, even in Northern Europe. Not so far north that melting glaciers are a thing, but shorter and warmer winters, earlier spring, burnt grass in summer (this has never been a thing in Finland), disruption of long-standing weather patterns…

Most “sensible” deniers nowadays claim it’s not human made. For them I always keep this xkcd handy.

For those affected by it. But it’s called global climate catastrophe for a reason.

Nothing against you, but I know that some people would use that argument in earnest.

And the most common sentiment about climate change right now among KTU civil engineer students is “oh stop shoving this climate bullshit down our throats” and it isn’t even exclusive to the fucking students.

Makes me mad listening to it.

We had 2 snowfalls this winter here in Austria and summer regularly hits 30+ for multiple weeks. No snow = no melting water reservoir… Yet our people vote for a Partie that still calls it a hoax. We’re so fucked.

I guess it’s similar to the situation in Germany, though a few years further in the development.

Right wing populism, lack of political education, populist media outlets, centre politicians adopting right wing policies in an ill-fated attempt to get their voters back, a population generally dissatisfied with the establishment due to the consequences of neoliberalism, etc.

Australia is a big country with trucks delivering stuff everywhere which makes for a huge part of out climate contribution. Per capita we’re in the doghouse for emissions standards, fortunately there’s not a lot of us.

          Night Trains for European Routes.
I do this regularly for all my long distance travels. It’s unfortunately more expensive than flying, but it’s better for the environment and you don’t really lose time as it’s over night.

Most flights aren’t long distance, but “I want to get wasted 1000kms away on a 30€ easyJet Fare with the boys”
And even for the long distances in Europe, if the political will is there you could have High Speed Night Trains

We should focus on reducing the emissions we can easily reduce right now. As I’ve said, intercontinental travel is not a huge part of plane travel/emissions in Europe.

You can make synthetic fuel from CO2 and lots of electricity, and researchers say, that this might be something for those long flights. But it will make them much much more expensive.

Perhaps the denial is more widespread there because in the wealthy oil dictatorships there is no other industry, at all. The saudi dictator is trying to diversify but let’s not kid ourselves, the economy is still 95% oil

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don’t overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don’t post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don’t troll nor incite hatred. Don’t look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia’s List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don’t question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add “/s” when you’re being sarcastic (and don’t use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don’t evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don’t post uncontextualized images or videos, and don’t start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

  • on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons)
  • on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera

Unless they’re the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any “thinktank” type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don’t link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
