An artificial intelligence ‘Doctor Who’ was sent to the BBC’s Matt Brittin and he said it was “pretty good”

CGI in Doctor Who is one thing, but it seems so misguided to use AI to generate an episode from whole cloth. I wouldn’t want that even if they were just recreating the lost episodes with it, let alone making new ones :(

Exciting. It means the BBC can dispense with writers now. Quite soon the AI will be able to design and generate all SFX so no human input will be needed. After that, it’s just a matter of replacing actors with AI modes and the BBC won’t even need to film the show.

Of course, at that point the show will only be watched by bots who will write reviews and make Youtube vidoes to be watched by other bots. The future is glorious!

We should be so lucky as to quietly back away while technology feeds technology. Maybe then the humans can live.

AI can be campy. I think that’s maybe one reason they feel this way. And it’s a reason this also feels like a threat to Doctor Who. Oof.

I think the issue with this isn’t whether an ai can generate an episode, can it generate hundreds of coherent episodes that are actually entertaining?

And even if it can…why would I want to watch that? What’s the point of exiting if we aren’t able to do anything?

Well maybe yeah on some level. It could be a fun thing is we could theoretically extend our shows as long as we wanted or whatever, maybe? But I am more saying I don’t think the tech actually works that way, it just seems like it does. Like ChatGPT doesn’t have the literal millions of unique jokes it would actually take to replace anyone who really writes jokes, it’s a lake that’s an inch deep.

Even if AI could make a perfect show with an ending included, I’d still rather watch stuff made by humans, unless we all get UBI and don’t need to worry about starving to death if we can’t find work.

Only if the BBC hires good ones. They seem to always want to kill the show even though it’s probably their global top hit.

RLM has a good idea for Star Trek. People are tired of short seasons and years between them. Force the writers to work with a limited budget and time frame.

I would go back to the quarries and focus on banging out longer stories and longer seasons. Let more guest writers in to experiment and see if the popular ones want to sign on long term. No more universe ending threats for the season finale.

Yeah I agree. Give us 20 episodes and churn them out. Give space for exploring it. Also, retcon the re-destruction of Gallifrey and have some old-school episodes of arrogant space aristocrats.

Episode like whole production? Or script?

Even as someone who doesn’t like generative AI, I’d be very curious to see it.

Even if you don’t like AI, it could be framed within an arc. The AI generated episode is the first. The second is the Doctor convincing people it’s not them. The third episode is revealing the aliens behind it (e.g. the Daleks) and going to where they are and deleting the source.

…Eh, I’m not sure I’d go for that.

…but I’m not sure it wouldn’t be worse than the last few series…

AI visuals look good and the voices are also good. It does not surprise me someone can write some really good scenes. As far as I can tell it only ever works for zoomed in dialog spaced with pretty static imagery. And dynamic action or physics is a joke.
