Have been Mac user since 2002. Now I exclusively use Linux and Graphene OS and no more Apple services.
Also switched to Qwant for search, Swiss providers for hosting and email and a Swiss VPS with Pangolin as a Cloudflare replacement.

I switched to searXNG for my search engine of choice. I use easyDNS to host my .ca domain and a wildcard email address. HostHero pissed me off to many times and did not offer a wildcard for their email, I use a different email address for everything so I get next to no spam, if I do in HostHero I would delete the address, but with easyDNS I would just need to go into easyMAIL and block the address or something like that, have not needed to do that yet everything just goes to junk mail right now and I decide if it deserves to go to my inbox. That way I do not need to see emails to services I still want to use but do not want to clutter up my inbox or be sorted into folders.

Until there is a third (and better) option that is easily available to the average retail shopper, it won’t be many.
Name one non-apple and non-android phone that I can buy in a retail shop in Canada. Or can even get from an online Canadian shop.

I was an Apple fan girl for a long time when I was a wee little person I believe it was an Apple 2 I was playing with, I learnt how to use the internet on a Preforma someting something I use a iMac G3, iMac G4, a few Mac Pros, and a Mac Mini. I have had 3 versions of the iphone, countless ipods, and 2 ipad’s. My current Mac Pro died on me a while back and I thought I would be fine with just my ipad and iphone. My iPhone stops getting updates next year and will only receive security updates whenever, so in the next year or two I will be getting a Motorola phone and installing either graphine because that is supposed to be coming to Motorola phones or I will find out about e/OS in my area.
I have a bunch of raspberry pi’s doing stuff around my home, Home Assistant, 2 pi-holes, and many other services. My Media pi 5 was having some difficulties doing its stuff so I thought hey I can dust off the old Mac mini update it and see what I needed to do to secure it on my network. Whatever updates it needed/could use where no longer offered on the Apple servers so I just installed Debian and it has been just working along as my *arr server and Jellyfin host.
Or some people used to like apple and stopped buying their shit then years ago because believe or not change is possible.
I’ve already replaced my Apple Watch with UNA watch that is the first modular end user repairable watch. They’re also based out of Scotland and have a development environment so anyone can design an app. Not American.
My next thing will be to de-iPhone. I’m thinking graphene OS since it’s originally developed by a Torontonian. Again: Not American.
After that, it’ll be finding a decent laptop and deploying Linux on it. Not sure which distro. I’ve always loved Debian on the server side. If not they I might just consider finding a Linux I can install into of my M1 MacBook.
My search engine is now ecosia. Not American but still gives search results with Bing. Need to find something non U.S.
I’ve degoogled most things and have cancelled all my U.S. streaming services and have other ways to watch. Yaarg!
It’s a slow process to remove American based tech, but it’s doable. Some are rough around the edges, but I’m willing to give up convenience to make America feel pain. I know myself individually does nothing, but if Canada and the greater world dump US tech and develop our own, and or open source, it’ll hurt. Bad.

Deleted Google maps because of their bootlicking bullshit. Switched to OsmAnd.
Try CoMaps! It uses the same open source data as OsmAnd (Open Street Maps) but it has a much nicer UI in my opinion.
Apple is holding the line.
They won’t, and will eventually update it to whatever the GNIS says it is. Which, if I’m honest, is what mapping companies should do.
Don’t get me wrong, it’d be pretty cool for Google/Apple/Microsoft to give a middle finger to Trump by specifically making exceptions in this case and the Gulf of Mexico. But at the end of the day I’m not too mad at companies for passing through exactly what the GNIS says. We need to attack the problem at the source, not the map itself.
