I remember seeing myxomatosis stricken rabbits in my youth. They liked horrible with bloodied eyes. This was in the eighties in the Netherlands.

Ik unsure if that was because the virus escaped Australia or that it was introduced in purpose. But as a young child it was horrible to see.
