Every morning when I launch this app (e I use Boost) I block like four of those. It’s so exhausting lol

I also regularly suggest to other users that it’s perfectly fine to block often.

I myself have had a ‘block one person per day’ policy since I got here 2 years ago! The only thing that could possibly keep me sane is blocking!

Honestly I think part of the problem is that Lemmy designed communities to be specific to the host they’re on rather than distributed across the fediverse, so communities and posts end up duplicated across the various Lemmy servers. On Mastadon the closest thing to communities is hashtags which are not instance specific. On the other hand, Lemmy is trying to replicate a reddit-like experience including each community having specific moderators who can set the tone and rules and curate posts for the community, which requires really requires at least leadership of the community to collaborate directly.

It’s a challenge that I’m not sure if it has an obvious solution yet. Is it better to not have any control over communities and instead moderate at an instance level? This bypasses a lot of the power mod problems that reddit had and Lemmy might develop, but I think it remains to be seen as the fediverse developes more

Not the kind of thing I think of as worthy of a confession. I’ve blocked over 900 communities and have finally made All into something that’s actually pleasant to browse.

The vast majority of which were sorts, porn, and anime. No hate on any of them, just not my cup of tea

Yeah no regrets. I didn’t have much luck seeking new communities to subscribe to - activity across the fediverse is still too low for handful of subscribes to provide a noteworthy stream of new content.

Chipping away at All felt like a Sisyphean task at first, but a few bites with each session and now it’s just the occasional maintenance block when a new community pops up that I’m not interested in. It’d be nice if there was some kind of tag system where I could just block all “sports” content in one fell swoop - it’d literally make a months long project take like 10 mins instead.

I have a hard time recommending Lemmy to folks in my IRL circle cuz I know their initial choices here are going to be either to mop up an absolute fuckton of furry porn; or stare at cobwebs accumulating in a ‘subscribed’ tab.
