I’ve been testing Zed for the last couple weeks for some Vue / Nuxt projects. It works great for that and seems very stable so far, but is also developed by a for-profit. Curious to see how the Zedless project works out.

robber@lemmy.mlto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Help me choose hardware for my first custom setupEnglish2·2 months agoI would recommed to use redundant storage, such as a RAID 1 (or 5 or 6, if you want a more advanced setup). This way your data doesn’t die with your SSD.
I must say I’m not 100% happy with my InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen 9 AMD. The build quality has very much improved since the Gen 7 (which I daily-drove before), but it feels like Tuxedo’s take on “Linux Laptop” is rather something like “Tuxedo-OS Laptop”. On Fedora I had to tweak kernel params so my laptop doesn’t wake up from sleep on its own and do the same to resolve an audio issue, and my RJ45 port just simply doesn’t work even with their drivers.
And something inside the device makes a quiet but annoying beep-like noise when the fans don’t spin.
Apart from that I love the device, but if you plan to use your own distro of choice and really want a high-quality build I’d not really recommend it.
robber@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•Which distro would you install on a celeron 2gb ram laptop for a lay person to use?2·3 months agoI recently had to use a friend’s old 4gb macbook for some weeks because my laptop was stolen. I was surprised how well everything worked, even when using a few web apps in firefox. I think with using zram and avoiding web / electron apps where possible, you might get quite something out of a 4gb machine.

robber@lemmy.mlto Linux@lemmy.ml•Podman 5.3 released with changes for improved networking experience with pasta8·6 months agoTake a look at the
podman kube play
command which lets you run K8s-style stack definitions on podman. Has partly replaced compose for me (although I still have some docker servers running for stacks that don’t play nicely with podman yet).
IIRC there is a plugin for Caddy that can do what you are looking for.
Edit: here you go
Probably not what OP is looking for.
But I’m also happy with my Garmin Instinct. I use it disconnected from my phone, it does everything I need offline and stand-alone. To add tracks for navigation I just connect it to my linux laptop and drop the GPX file into the NewFiles (or whatever it’s called) folder on the watch. I was surprised how well it works without official apps. The only thing I used the app for was to update the firmware when I bought the watch.
Also, fittrackee looks promising - thanks for the tip!
I would second that. I currently use nix besides Flatpaks for development environments but also find it somewhat overcomplicated. Looking forward to give toolbx a try.

I went to a small (~30 people) festival dedicated to wood carving, because I was asked if a wanted to cook for everyone. Found it very inspiring to get an impression of that very specific sub culture.
A little overconfident as usual imo
Swiss lemming here. Switzerland already open-sourced multiple projects before, most notably the app to store your COVID test / vaccination status in. It was even officially available on F-Droid. I was very suprised at that point, and I’m happy to see that there are now efforts to make such behavior more default and less edge case, even when there are exceptions.
robber@lemmy.mlto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•what's your current linux distro?1·11 months agoYes, you can just go ahead and install nix in your distro to use e.g.
nix-shell
to create a development environment.

TuxedoOS because my so-called “Linux-Laptop” turned out to not run mainline Linux very smoothly. But I hate that fact that it’s Ubuntu-based.
I’d use Debian, Arch or dabble with Void if I could on my laptop, my servers run Debian or Alma.
