I was giving him positive reinforcement his first year (honestly thought it would work with him to reinforce the good things he does), this year is the brutal truth year.

More Sci fi than dystopian, but I still recommend
I am genuinely having a hard time with my Gen Z employee. I have to go through everything step by step each time and it just seems like nothing sticks. I even create documentation for him and he just can’t follow it fully.
I’m truly baffled and any advice is welcome.
ramsgrl909@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•how do I tell my boss that I am not studying for a certification he wants me to get in my own time?7·2 months agoIf getting the cert is part of your goals or part of your work, then you need to tell your boss you are willing to put in the work during business hours. Anything work related outside of business hours requires overtime pay.
If these certs are not part of your goals/work, then I would suggest talking with your boss about incorporating them in.

I like to ask folks what they do for fun, gives me a better general idea of who they are

ramsgrl909@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone have solid, tried and true strategies for improving communications with engineers?131·4 months agoI work in a fairly toxic work environment.
The reasons I do what the engineers are doing are,
-
A lot of times people will ask me questions and I give them answers. Then something will go wrong and it will somehow be my fault that I didn’t mention it to them (they didn’t ask, and I don’t know the specifics of what they are doing).
-
I have my own goals and projects for the year. Why should I give you a significant amount of my time when my salary/bonus will not reflect helping you in anyway.
-
Job security.
These might sound bad, but that is how it works in corporate America
Edit: It sounds like you need management on board with you before you can fully continue

ramsgrl909@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a human behaviour you've never understood?24·4 months agoWanting expensive designer clothes/accessories.
One, I hate spending money. Two, I’d worry about ruining them too much to ever want to wear/use them. Three, they just generally aren’t comfortable.
ramsgrl909@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What did you lose along the way and how will you restore it or make things right again?1·6 months agoSomething that helped me was to “just do it for 2 mins” - then decide if you want to keep doing it or not. I found a lot of times since I was already doing it, I would keep going.
This really helped me get back on track.

ramsgrl909@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Homeless encampments have largely vanished from San Francisco. Is the city at a turning point?25·7 months agoI just went to Dreamforce last week and was told they push the tents further away from the conference while it’s happening.
I don’t know what it looked like before but there are still PLENTY of homeless in San Francisco and it’s very sad to see.
Less scifi and more fantasy, I just finished The Priory Of The Orange Tree and I highly recommend
And just want to add A Great And Terrible Beauty as another Fantasy book that is a wonderful read (series)
ramsgrl909@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you have trouble explaining your job to people?5·8 months agoTis a thankless job!
I grew up with and worked at McDs in high school and college. It used to be a family place (play places, fun colors) it used to be a friendly place (you could have birthdays there, cashiers were nice, you’d run into people you know), it used to have prices that were reasonable/cheap.
It is none of those things anymore. Why on earth would I go there when there’s a burger place right across the road thar costs maybe $1 or $2 more and is actually good?
