That sounds like you just got a dud of a battery. Because phones dying in a few months is not normal. A quick look online and it seems like smasnug has a 24 month warranty (in regions other than North America). Have you tried a warranty replacement?
If battery degradation is the only problem, why not just replace the battery? You can probably find a shop that will do it, or iFixit has a guide and sells batteries for $55.

Seems pretty wasteful to throw out the whole phone because of a dead battery. Do you also get a new car instead of changing the tires when they get worn?

What do you mean? I’ve been assured by many people that we can’t do anything about car infrastructure because “its always been that way”. Are you saying that cities weren’t built for cars, but instead were destroyed to make room for cars over the last only 50ish years?
