I’m like this post but I use GNU Guix System instead of Gentoo and GNU Boot instead of the old fully free Libreboot (and I have my own appartment lol).
Some computers do not require having the ME firmware installed. Usually, these are computers supported by a 100% free BIOS replacement such as GNU Boot (see the compatible models on the website). Libreboot was fully free in the past but it’s not true anymore since it does now support computers needing the ME working (at least for computer initialization) but neutered so that most of it can’t operate. However, you can’t be sure whether a neutered ME is harmful or not since we don’t know what it can really do as the initialization source code is not known.
Using GNU Guix to build can solve the “difficult to install” issue and also help with dependency management, however compilation time can’t be avoided. Advantages remain, however, thanks to package transformation options!

1·5 months agoYeah well, it was convenient to dismiss radical free software ideas by telling everyone it’s obsolete 🙄 thus calling that “traditional”

There are intermediary steps, e.g. GNU Guix System 🫣
I would say that a mathematician would rather write i²=-1 than sqrt(-1)=i

Linux@lemmy.ml•Distrochooser: Tool to choose a good Linux distribution for your needsFrançais
1·7 months agoIt never proposed GNU Guix to me. Quite unfortunate, that’s my daily driver and I love it.
I do use it, as it’s the default kernel of the GNU Guix distro which I use daily.
The main drawbacks is that it forces you to choose your hardware wisely, using e.g. h-node.org to be sure it’s compatible. Otherwise, this is quite exactly the same kernel, just really free as in freedom.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•What's your favourite OS that does not use systemd?Français
2·8 months agoThe main difference with NixOS is that it’s fully free. Another difference is that the language used for configuration in Guix is Scheme, a general purpose functional language.

8·8 months agoGNU Guix System, using GNU Shepherd as init. It does its job quite well.
I’m in my late 20s and started with ms-dos too. And even tried OS/2 to check I wasn’t missing something before upgrading to 3.1 then XP 😂

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which program is the one that surprised you most that it is available on Linux?Français
8·9 months agoI was really surprised by some libre games with really good graphics for free software, like Xonotic or Unvainquished. And also very cool projects like Speed-Dreams, that is not as beautiful but is really promising
Otherwise, very cool stuff like Kdenlive, Ardour, LMMS, Puredata, … This is a long list! 😅

No more.
