I read the first book and loved it. Same for the rest, found that they’re not necessarily better and don’t follow the same characters or even a timeline, so I never bothered.
I’m so looking forward to the last movie though. I don’t know if I’ve liked any as much since the LotR movies.

Linux@sh.itjust.works•Sign the petition against client side scanning in the UK
6·3 days agoThese UK petitions seem to pass 10K or even 100K signatures only for the gov to respond with ‘we decided to ignore your opinions and go ahead with the surveillance state anyway’
Fucking hell, how does a day of golfing estimate to over a $mil? Does he have a whole security detail and a helicopter transport?

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Seriously though what the fuck is wrong with this guy
3·4 days agoI’m genuinely interested in knowing whether a case like this would be picked up at all. In the UK, it appears there is no minimal amount od damage incurred, so in such case I’d really think it’s possible. Db0 don’t even need to be the ones to sue or report the incident according to what I could find.

4·5 days agoMark my word, a couple decades from now when the bees are dead and ecosystems are dying, we’ll have bio startups making mutant superbees and tech startups making pollinating microdrone swarms.

NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover@lemmy.world•14 years on Mars takes its toll. Sol 4963 wheel-check (July 23, 2026)English
13·9 days agoThe wheels are built extremely thin (0.75mm aluminium) to save on weight. The rover is incredibly heavy (340kg/750lbs in Mars gravity) on those paper-thin wheels, I’m really amazed it held this far.

Technology@lemmy.world•Erin Brockovich Launches Public Registry to Track Data Center ComplaintsEnglish
1·10 days agoIt also says the goal isn’t to track every data center out of the 4000 operating in the US, just the ones the public is concerned about, yet there are over 8000 user submissions shown.
This erodes my confidence in the data, as there appear to be no checks or filters.
Wise man indeed, way ahead his time apparently

37·11 days agoSure , that still lands on your floor, and you wash the floor.
You’re being overly sensitive. It’s well known the average sink has way more bacteria than a toilet, yet that’s where we wash the dishes. Do you stop using the sink because it’s gross?

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Software bloat? This elevator needs an 8GB Core i5English
1·17 days agoThere are use cases for everything. Cheaper electricity during the night - schedule the dryer to sync with that. Disabled and can’t reach the AC or light controls easily? Do it through your phone.
The real problem IMO is that these are implemented poorly, insecurely* and often through closed ecosystems, remote servers and million apps.
If this was done well, users like you could ignore the features, and others could make use of them. When you can’t turn a fan on because your Fast Fans app logged you out, then I’d just rather not…

No, this is BS and not how the real world works. If would be fine if you’ve left it as a meme. Developers (in corps) don’t decide what they’ll work on.
