Tariffs issued by the US will only harm the US, and so on. The anti China block represents an extreme minority of people in the planet and an ever shrinking percentage of total industry and energy use. More and more countries are choosing brics

No one is talking about that. Actual solar plants and installations are run by dedicated companies with huge profit margins that currently are all in expansion phases. They make up the majority of solar power installed and operated.
That market is competitive, but not hyper competitive and dirt has a decent lobbying budget, hence Dems including solar subsidies to appease Texas of all states.

The localized pollution problems you’re referring to have been resolved. I know you won’t trust any source anyone here provides, so go ahead and look it up. Just because you got used to your government being useless and slow, doesn’t mean other governments are the same.

Solar approaches a 100% profit margin after 20 years, wind only ever gets to 90ish but still has the same timeline. Without subsidies, neither oil or coal gets profitable.

Trump needs to triple subsidies over the next 4 years to keep them competitive with renewable energy.
Just a reminder, Trump is not more corrupt or well bribed than Texas, and Texas is one of the largest producers of renewable energy in the Western hemisphere. Money wins over ideology, and there’s a lot more money to be had with solar and wind given the now low upfront costs and nearly non-existent maintenance costs compared to all fossil fuels.

Ro Khanna11·7 months agoIt’s a procedural rule, yes it can be put back in place if Republicans want to, they don’t, but it can be. This is because it has no law associated with it, no bill to pass, it’s something the Senate made up to stall civil rights and especially keep brown senators in the 1800s from doing anything the extreme white minority didn’t want.
It’s not a ‘nuclear option,’ it’s a return to how the country was designed to function and did function for more than a century.

Ro Khanna22·7 months ago370 billion, mostly for tax credits that are actively being abused by bad actors, all that don’t address the actual problems. Every house could have solar panels and every car could be an EV and it simply would not be enough to get anywherr near carbon neutrality, much less the needed carbon negative to avoid 2c by 2030.
The reality is China proved it was possible to lower emissions by actual green investment, building more green energy production last year than the total green energy capacity of the US. They’ve hit peak emissions while the US hasn’t. This isn’t meant as a China good thing, to preempt that nonsensical reply, but merely as a direct example of what the US could do given they have similar (though slightly lower) GDP. At this point in time China produces more green energy than the US produces total.

Ro Khanna33·7 months agoWhat importance? Neither party is giving up oil subsidies or really investing all that much into green energy, and neither party has even the slightest thought about criminally investigating investors and owners of oil and coal companies for their, and this cannot be overstated, crimes against humanity that top all other crimes ever committed by any arbitrary grouping of people.
The choices are accelerate climating change incredibly quickly via fake carbon capture technology and carbon credit schemes that not only don’t lead to lower total emissions but actually increase emissions, or accelerate even faster by releasing the few regulations we have rregarding the environment.

World News@lemmy.ml•The global fertility crisis: are fewer babies a good or a bad thing? Experts are divided4·7 months agoOffer education, contraception, and healthcare universally, regardless of border. This would tank the birthrate in a non fascist way, which is an objectively good thing. This weird procapitalist idea that we need or should want or really could sustain 8+ billion apex predators is ridiculous. In no ecosystem is that sustainable, even if the predators are smart enough to stop directly predating in other animals.
We should genuinely be striving for the least number of people that still allows the highest quality of life, with a further constraint being the lowest impact to the rest of the environment. Make no mistake, everyone regardless of immutable or even mutable status should be allowed to have kids if they want, but we shouldn’t want or need to frame it as something essential to continue continuity of wage labor.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus Torvalds Lands A 2.6% Performance Improvement With Minor Linux Kernel Patch1·7 months agoSanctions like this don’t work to affect change, it’s cruelty for the sake of cruelty with no other plausible purpose. Citizens have practically no control of their government in any nuclear state, blaming them and punishing them for something wholly unrelated to them based on their country of origin or residence is literally in the definition of hate speech, and literally is a fascist activity.
How did treating all dissent as Russian/Chinese bots/trolls work out this election? Not very well. Because they mostly don’t exist.
