Came here to say this. I want them to have a national edition - that I might subscribe to.

We need to subscribe to newspapers again. Or at least pick up the weekend edition. That said, I wish there was a way I could pay x amount each month and get access to a handful of newspapers.
Bulk barn is Canadian, but you’d have to look at where the products are from. They were labelling them; I’m not sure if they still are.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Loblaw backtracks on dropping country-of-origin produce labels after customer backlash
8·2 days agoI’m fortunate that I have that option as well. I didn’t generally shop at them before, so not a big hardship, but I would be very hesitant to go back now if I did. They’ve had over a year (how long has this been going one?) to figure this out, and decided instead to do this.
But if the article is correct, and they don’t have to label, we need to change that. I’d rather a label that said “product of US, Mexico, Peru or some other five countries” if they really don’t know.
Are you looking for medication or the things you buy from drug stores because for some reason that’s where we often go for makeup and shampoo and gift cards.
If the former, check out https://www.guardian-ida-remedysrx.ca/ - I feel they don’t have as much of the latter.
To start with, check out Mauril. It’s an app put out by CBC-Radio Canada. It uses bits of archive videos with vocab and comprehension questions. It’s not going to make you fluent by any means but it’s a start.

Boycott US@lemmy.ca•How Canada can help Americans and defeat America – from Cory DoctorowEnglish
14·3 days agoThere are so many good reasons to legalize jailbreaking. It’s not even jailbreaking - I bought a thing. As long as I take responsibility if I break the thing, I should be able to do what I want with it.
I second Krita. There also used to be CorelDraw… but they were acquired by private equity earlier this year :(
Yes. It seems like a little thing, but I think we really need to strengthen our cross Canada relationships. Those with indigenous communities as well.
I don’t doubt you but why do we rely on them for oil and lumber? You’d think we produce enough here. But maybe we’re sending it all south to be processed into something usable.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Quebec’s appliance giants at war against a minor reform
1·15 days agoThat was my reaction as well.
I’m concerned that you seem to be having such a strong reaction to my legitimate comment that many people (not all, maybe not even the majority) who say “I could never cycle because of xyz” have never tried - even in my very bike friendly city, even when people who share xyz do indeed cycle. But I’m done with this thread.
For many people, the bike purchase isn’t disposable income. It’s in place of buying the much more expensive car. Sure, they’re fortunate enough to be able to live in a place where it’s doable … but people do it in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal, Toronto. Even if people in these major cities leaned more towards bikes, it would make a difference - and not just towards the global environment but to their local environment. The particulate matter from EV brake and tires is as bad or worse than ICE cars because of their extra weight.
You missed my point entirely. Even here in one of the most bikeable places, people find excuses. Yes, it other places some of those excuses become legitimate reasons, but often they are not; in many cases, they’re still just excuses.

4·21 days agoNo, Canada has its own spelling conventions that are neither British nor American.

Canada@lemmy.ca•‘We can’t make it better again’: what Europe’s wildfires tell us about the climate crisis
2·24 days agoYes systemic change is the most important, but I don’t believe in abdicating my personal responsibility. I do what I can to mitigate my personal impact. For me personally, that means walking/cycling most places, following a vegan diet, just consuming less generally. I can’t change my heating or cooling because I live in a condo, but I do what I can to lower my energy costs.
There’s still more I could do (like less doomscrolling) but I believe in trying to take action on an individual level, both because a million people doing the same adds up but it also signals to governments and corporations that I take this seriously. I also feel better making the effort to live according to my values.
I found this video interesting, and the farmer talking about how hard it is to get their berries into stores because why would the store deal with a bunch of farmers when they can deal with one company. So the issue isn’t just merging of all berries under one company but the merge of grocery stores under a handful of companies.
