I tried bazzite, unfortunately I had some odd quirks that I can only attribute to an immutable OS. Things like window and UI scaling wasn’t consistent. My mouse cursor would blow up to twice the size when hovering over one window then shrink back down on another. I can only guess this is because the base filesystem is only readable and it can’t write any values for scaling on certain themes/window decorations. While not a huge deal, it comes off as sloppy and inconsistent. It’s not a great user experience and first impressions are everything. It’s easy to make a first impression, it’s damn near impossible to make a second one, and my first impression of an immutable OS has been soured. I installed mint 22 and it’s been a completely different experience, from window decorations, to time shift backups, system updates, Bluetooth, cinnamon theming, it just works out of the box with little to no setup.
It would if I were using Nvidia but I use AMD.
Latest mesa + plasma 6.1.1 = janky as well
Window dodging recently broke on me so I can’t dodge windows on any of the panels properly anymore, was working great on 6.1. Certain windows will cause the desktop to lock up and I can’t click on any windows or icons in the panel task manager. The global menu only works half the time now. I’m getting severe mouse cursor stuttering on a 120Hz display on the desktop, certain games running proton that were fine before have micro stutter. It’s been a pretty terrible experience on the AMD side recently.
I’ve looked at revolt and well, when I tried using it it was filled with less than reputable individuals. I don’t remember specifics but I remember noping the fuck off revolt real quick. If you want text chat, try matrix, if you want voice well, then idk what to say other than discord, team speak or guilded. Guilded is pretty cool, I actually like the client way better than discord but my friends all use discord and guilded isn’t a huge platform. It is backed by the Roblox company so you at least know it’s gonna be supported, but then again, it’s the Roblox company…
I wouldn’t say in the works, this is one person who’s a web developer posting on Reddit about an idea. In the works usually tells me they’re already working on the project, not trying to find people to help start it. GL to them I guess.
They rehash the same chip over and over again each generation with minimal gains, increase the power requirements and cut out third party oems like EVGA. Give it a couple generations and I would bet they’ll only be selling the 4080/90 equivalents in the future and let intel or amd have the midrange and low range market, freeing up manufacturing for their AI/ML hardware. Doesn’t matter if it’s conjecture, the writing is on the wall. People are choosing to ignore it even though the market is flooded with low end Nvidia cards made to look like their low and midrange offerings aren’t selling. It’s only a matter of time, the consumer graphics market is a second class citizen for Nvidia.
It’s true though…consumer graphics mean damn near nothing to them, their AI/ML profits shit all over your precious 4080’s and 4090’s in regards to straight profit for Nvidia.
I would keep in mind one thing with Nvidia. Their consumer GPU market is a drop in the bucket compared to their server, cloud and AI/ML markets. AMD dedicates real effort and resources to their hardware development and they don’t lock their features to their own platform. I’m still using a vega56 and haven’t really felt a need to upgrade because things like fsr just keep my card chugging along.
Because it’s a pendantic and contrarian remark that makes you look like some kind of self-indulgent prick. The fact that you can’t just say “you’re stupid” and had to make sure you sound intellectually superior just reaffirms my observation.
Stop it, no one cares…making it look like something recognizable to the masses is the idea. No one cares about it looking like a real proton or electron.
As others have said use the Pop_OS! Nvidia ISO. Nvidia drivers are just problematic on Linux. There’s a good chance your games will just work with that OS. It’s also based off Ubuntu, so it has access to the same software repositories.
Yeah there are distros that make the driver install process seamless like pop and Nobara. I’ve used both and have stuck with endeavorOS for now.
If they don’t use AMD then good luck, Nvidia is historically garbage on Linux. I’ve built my rig to be AMD only for the specific use case of gaming on Linux so it has been a fantastic experience for me.
I’ve been running Wayland for a while on my amd rig and haven’t had any problems with xwayland in regards to compatibility. Nvidia on the other hand is problematic but the drivers seem to be improving with every release.
Spellforce 3, just picked it up today and it’s pretty easy to learn for the most part. It’s very much like warcraft 3 in gameplay style but looks great graphically. It’s also on sale right now on steam.
Tried it, didn’t like it all that much. You’re limited to installing flatpak versions of apps, since every app is flatpak based it pops up a notification in the KDE notification tray and you have to manually click the prompt in the notification and approve it for every app.
Since it’s flatpak only I can’t install gnome-disks to setup automount of my game SSD and I really don’t like using KDE partition manager as well as manually editing fstab, I know I could just use the gnome version but I really dislike gnome and would prefer KDE.
Game performance was negligible between bazzite and every other distro I’ve used so there’s no real reason for me to switch.
Overall, it’s not terrible, but there are several minor things that add up to a frustrating experience. I feel limited when using bazzite, limiting me to flatpak just feels odd and is probably something I could get used to but honestly I just don’t have the time to waste.
A very simple reason, I use Linux because when I use Linux I feel like my computer is mine and mine alone, when I use Windows I feel like I’m leasing my PC from Microsoft and I have no control over the OS. I’d rather own my PC from hardware all the way up to the software.
I like cinnamon, but any DE that doesn’t support Wayland these days is just shooting itself in the foot. Evolve or fade away, stop hanging onto x11.
As a pixel 6a user I’m excited I’ll get a few more years of support and use out of this phone.
