News@lemmy.world•Minneapolis firearm instructors see surge in interest amid ongoing turmoilEnglish
44·10 hours agoI’m not saying that people shouldn’t do this, but it’s exactly what Trump wants people to do.
He wants everybody to be armed so that the odds of someone killing an ICE agent go up. Trump believes conflict between the government and citizens will allow him to use the Insurrection Act to mobilize the military against us, and then as he continues to escalate violence, he believes that he’ll be justified in canceling our elections moving forward.
People need to keep this in mind as they decide how to act going forward. It is practical to arm yourself, but you should go out of your way to avoid using a weapon.

13·11 hours agoIt’s possible that MAGA will go see it in order to make it successful, just like how Nazis bought Mein Kampf but never read it.
But probably not many MAGA view Melania as having any worth.
That’s TeX, not LaTeX.
Don Knuth (who originally wrote TeX) had a real obsession with perfection. He even thought he could pay exponentially increasing awards to people who found errors in his books.
He eventually stopped doing that because he wasn’t as perfect as he thought he was. Still way off the charts compared to the average person, though.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla: 2024 was bad, 2025 was worse as profit falls 46 percentEnglish
38·11 hours agoIt’s irritating to see him looting the company like that when he actually delivers negative value to the company otherwise. Literally it would be better for Tesla to give those bonuses to some random person on the street than to Musk.
I know you’re joking, but illegal immigrants do kill people, just at a lower rate than the general population.
A big part of the problem is that if you’re an illegal immigrant, then you have a huge incentive to keep your fucking head down and not be noticed.
So you don’t notice the vast majority whose only crime was illegally entering the country. Meanwhile, the ones who do commit crimes make national news because some people have an agenda in spreading that type of news.

News@lemmy.world•Cop gets 20 years for fatally shooting woman who called 911 for helpEnglish
10·11 hours agoThe woman reported a prowler and they had already checked the outside of the house. I wonder if they actually needed to go inside the house in the first place.
I wouldn’t voluntarily allow cops into my house unless the situation required them to enter my house.

tumblr@lemmy.world•This is why you should respect our vetsEnglish
5·11 hours agoLast time I had a surgery, I accidentally insulted the lead nurse and instantly felt like I made the biggest mistake of my life, even though she said she thought it was funny.
We were having a friendly chat before the surgery and I guess I was too relaxed, and at one point, she said that if she makes a funny face, it was just her normal behavior and not something bad had happened, and I jokingly said, “How would I know?” and instantly died inside.
It’s like an automatic joke I’d say with my friends, but I barely knew this lady. I hadn’t even really noted what she looked like. And when I actually looked, she had a very alternative look. I think she had a lot of tattoos and green hair.
She thought it was funny, but I started sweating.
I’m sure the poster pulled these numbers out of their ass. I wonder what the real numbers would be.
It’s guaranteed that replacing MAGA people with the same kind of immigrants we have today would reduce crime, but how much?

tumblr@lemmy.world•This is why you should respect our vetsEnglish
9·13 hours agoI wonder what the numbers are, as well.
Like, if there are more veterinarians in total, or if they’re more spread out, then you’d expect that more of them would survive, just from that, than surgeons.
As an adult, I know, either as friends or family, two people who studied veterinary medicine in college, but only one who actually became a vet. I know four nurses. But I don’t know any medical doctors or surgeons.

91·22 hours agoICE’s feed says that they did this jump start thing, but let’s get real. It probably never happened.
These are the same people who lied and said that an officer suffered internal bleeding after he clearly didn’t get hit by anything. These are the same people who lied and said that they killed a man who was brandishing a weapon threateningly and their agents feared for their lives despite the fact that he never touched the gun and was disarmed at the time of the shooting.
If ICE says something that benefits themselves, then I have no reason to believe it’s true. This is the slant to take whenever you get any information from a source of propaganda.
That’s a picture of ICE agents walking near a car with jumper cables connected. Maybe they saw somebody getting jumped and photobombed. Maybe they just used one of their own cars and the entire scene is staged.
Even in the extremely remote possibility that they actually did something to make another person’s life easier, they ruined it by taking pictures of it. That would mean that they only helped as PR.
There is no reason to believe when a known propagandist tells you something like this. You should first expect them to lie or distort the truth.
Looks like the last Beartato update was in 2023. Sad, I always liked that comic.
I don’t expect other people will like it as much as I do, but here is maybe my favorite Beartato comic ever: https://nedroid.com/?403
For some reason, I am starting to feel closer to the methods of Diogenes as I get older. If you’re not familiar with him, I suggest you read at least the intro on his Wikipedia page… actually, I’ll just copy it here:
Diogenes the Cynic (/daɪˈɒdʒɪniːz/, dy-OJ-in-eez; c. 413/403 – c. 324/321 BC), also known as Diogenes of Sinope, was an ancient Greek philosopher during the period of Classical Greece, and one of the founders of Cynicism.
Renowned for his ascetic lifestyle and radical critiques of social conventions, he became a legendary figure whose life and teachings have been recounted, often through anecdote, in both antiquity and modernity. Diogenes advocated for a return to nature, the renunciation of wealth, and introduced early ideas of cosmopolitanism by proclaiming himself a “citizen of the world”.
Diogenes was born to a prosperous family in Sinope. His life took a dramatic turn following a scandal involving the debasement of coinage, an event that led to his exile and ultimately his radical rejection of conventional values. Embracing a life of poverty and self-sufficiency, he became famous for his unconventional, shameless behaviors that openly challenged societal norms, such as living in a jar or wandering public spaces with a lit lantern in daylight, claiming to be “looking for a man”, that is to say “for a wise man” (sophos).

601·1 day agoa large chunk of the replies were “well MY displays work just fine!”
I just went to check the previous thread, and I think there’s miscommunication both ways here.
They read your post as “I’m trying Linux, but it’s even hard to get monitors to work.” So, they responded, “I haven’t had a problem with monitors on Linux in decades.”
There’s not much else they can say, as you weren’t really asking for advice, so you didn’t give any technical details, but you were still complaining about something that they like.
Meanwhile, you read them as you said, “well MY displays work just fine!” So their replies seem utterly baffling, defensive, and unhelpful from your perspective.

News@lemmy.world•Pam Bondi still can’t give release date for delayed Epstein files a month after missing deadlineEnglish
8·1 day agoThey don’t need a release date in the first place. They already released some of the files in small batches. And then they completely stopped without any explanation.
So we can see what they do when they are releasing the files. They just release batches as they finish them.
The fact that they aren’t doing that means that they intend to obstruct further progress on the release of the files.
It’s just the definition from Wikipedia:
Unlike domestic terrorism, state terrorism is that perpetrated by nation states, but is not considered such by the state conducting it, making legality a grey area.

This does happen a lot, but have you ever had the opposite happen? Where you go into some of your older code, and not only is it nice to read, but you had anticipated that you’d have to make this change later, and so the design makes the change easy?
That’s happened to me a few times and all I can say is that it takes days for my self-satisfaction to wane.
