      • ArcaneChat/DeltaChat apk size is way smaller, Element X is ~130MB
      • reactions are not encrypted in Matrix, plus often problems with “unable to decrypt”
      • with the money you need to run a matrix server you can run a lot of chatmail servers, the cost per user is much lower
      • matrix servers hold a lot of metadata, ex. group metadata and state, it is almost impossible to really delete information from the matrix server, the chatmail servers are dumb, know nothing about delta chat groups and all data is volatile, only stored temporarily for multi-device synchronization
      • ArcaneChat/DeltaChat have good multi-device and multi-profile support, IIRC Element only support one profile?

and more, but to be honest I feel lazy to reply because the answer seems so obvious to me, just search a bit, and I am not even touching the part of the proprietary integration server… matrix is on a path to doom

in addition to whar adb already mentioned, Matrix relies on funding from NATO govt-backed institutions, devotes development time to custom clients for their military security as a tit-for-tat, and its corporate structure has resulted in improvements to the server that were long promised being released as proprietary software. You have to look at it as a NATO attempt to smother XMPP
