It’s pruned down to a very small size. Occupies only a couple mb on disk. By default leaves out a bunch of features that are unnecessary for a container base image.
You could then theoretically just use something as Void Linux with GlibC, or Gentoo with GlibC, or something like that. Even a minimal Arch Linux image.
Nothing theoretical about this, I’ve just stopped making images with alpine, 200MB of storage won’t change anything (can be optimized really) and a lot less weird problems.
It will change everything if you don’t have a big (in capacity, not in physical size, lol) disk. Even worse with the current crisis on hardware prices.
Not really, per gigabyte price is still very low for both ssds and hdds, and container images are layered, so if you make the containerfiles correctly additional size is minimal and comes to depencies and application itself.
Yeah, venvs are the answer to “why is that folder 8gb?”
Containers are the answer to “why is my hard drive completely full”
Hold up, are people just out there not using Alpine for a container base image?
Most of them use bigger images as Debian or even Ubuntu. Eww
meh, someone probably forgot to nuke old images
Thank you for mentioning this! In thought I was the worlds only moron who filled 1tb with stale docker images.
And that kids, is when I learned about
prune - aWhat’s the alpine advantage here?

Huh! Good to know, ty
You can get weird problems due to musl when trying to use alpine with software that wasn’t expecting it, what else would you want?

Say this to, i.e., any Latin American, or Indian, or Southeast-Asian person, and they’ll kill you lmao.
Actually, I’m Venezuelan, so I’m Latin American; so, sorry, loads his imaginary gun, it’s nothing personal, just life’s law… Pew pew!
Yes
What morons!
*Hides 100gb of VM images in /var/lib/libvirt/images/ on his 230gb SSD*
Aw man, I love Lemmy. There’s so many dumb nerds that are the exact same as me!
That’s fine because those vms are configured by and run on nix.
Nope. They are configured on Debian and run on arch btw
