I have a KIA, it is decent but I would love more freedom ans I sont trust that access will remain free. VW is paid now.

I am in europe and looking to buy in2027.

      Yeah I was looking at the Buzz and California at the time! I would love the eCalifornia but I won’t give them the money, they don’t innovate enough and come across as entitled with their pricing and then charging for access to my cars features

    I have a KIA and the integration in HA is decent but it is through the KIA Connect server. Every so often, it asks to re-authenticate. This is the only integration in my HA that requires cloud account.

      I have the same, I dislike the kia app it is so poorly laid out and difficult to find features. HA is better but kia have a lot of similar sensors that are difficult to interact with.

      Really wish it could be local. I would go so far as to put my own sim in the car and point it to my own server only.

    Do not base one of the most expensive purchases of your life around a single application.

    My opinion - since you’re running HA, I assume you like having control over your data. Any vehicle with a connection to the manufacturer is absolutely sucking up your data (everything you do in and to the car), and selling it to insurance providers.

    Don’t lean on the GDPR to protect you here. Your data is not safe in a connected car. Buy used.

      Yeah I’m not, I have a number of options and this is a point of consideration.

      All cars are required to have a sim since 2016, I wish they didnt have manufacturer access but they do. I thought maybe I would get someone pointing out how to get access locally

          Yeah, tbh I want to decouple from tech providers completely and part of that would be enabling smart features to work locally in the car or back to a home server. I wish it were possible, currently you cant even get a FOSS alternative to apple or android auto

              The duopoly prevents it. In theory it should be simple to plug something other in and use it but the manufscturers dont allow for it.

              Maps, music, calls and messages. None of this needs to be google and apple.

      I agree. Do not pick a brand based on a cloud service that’s subject to change.

      My car is not connected to HA because I never created a login for it. I even went through the process to disable data transmission from the vehicle to Subaru.

      OBD ports were not designed as IO ports. OBD plugins can cause parasitic draws, fires and fry the ECU.

        Huge portions of the auto industry use them as such, including rental companies and insurance carriers.

        I think I’ll take the actions of the people who actually pay money based on those consequences rather than a rando on the internet.

    A 20 year old something or other that doesn’t interact with Home Assistant is your best bet for a free way to gain more freedom and trust. Bonus: you’ll save tens of thousands on the initial purchase. You’re basically being paid to have more freedom and trust

        I’m not sure how much that costs where you’re from, but that might be offset by not having to pay for comprehensive insurance - again, if that’s an option where you’re from.

    There’s a pretty nicely made HACS module that allows me to scrape my Toyota Prius data and do whatever I want with it in HA. I can even remote start from it, and have an automation that auto starts my car on hot or cold days 15 minutes before the end of my shift.

    Big caveats: the remote features are subscription. You get many years for free when you buy new, but mine is actually close to lapsing now and I don’t think I’m going to pay for more. I doubt the plugin will continue to work as is one that happens.

    I don’t know how well this translates to Europe, but I’ve been pretty happy with Ford. The remote stuff is free and there’s a HACS extension with a lot of controls available.
