None of this is in the source code. It’s downloaded at runtime from a file nobody has ever looked at.

diabolical, thanks for all your work with this

I think I got banned from there

Some megamod mass banned me from a bunch of random communities which is annoying, basically reddit behaviour

            Same.

Especially because from my instance, I can’t conveniently block communities that I’m banned from. The block button disappears when banned. I have to go into my settings and manually add the name of the community to my blocklist.

So, yeah, it’s pretty annoying when a community I’ve never even heard of before pops up in my feed and I’m already banned from it, so then I have to open up the manual block list settings…

I’ve been banned from unrelated communities for having an opinion one of their mods didn’t like. I’d understand if it was because I posted in that community. At this point people are banning me because my mod log has allegations of transphobia and stuff (the admin of my instance I believe is trans, we’ve discussed things, they’ve helped me speak about certain subjects in a gentle manner, I don’t have any ill will towards transgender people, it’s just terminology I used was seen as offensive) which is just a weird cycle of being banned because I have a “mark” on me from what was likely a misunderstanding or overzealous mod years ago, or me discussing things from a theological perspective and it wasn’t actually what I believed politically either.

I’ve (apparently) got on one power mod’s bad side just by downvoting a few of their AI slop posts.

I don’t understand, what instance uses this? If they filter the listed words does that mean posts containing them won’t show? That would make conversations on Lemmy incoherent with gaps and wipe out probably 50% of the content?

Any instance can run any number of UI frontends. E.g. Lemmy.world offers a choice of several of them. Afaiu one can also run a frontend on their own computer or server and connect to an instance.

Dbzero seems to use Tesseract, which is how they discovered the problem originally, and have since forked it to remove filtering.

I wouldn’t let him anywhere near an open-source project again, or even anything involving the Fediverse for that matter. His actions go against everything that FOSS/Fediverse/Lemmy stands for if you think about it. You can’t be putting obfuscated code (which is nearly exactly how malware delivers its payloads to avoid detection via base64 encoding and offloaded via a C2 server) and reasonably expect people to trust you again. Nope! All it could take is for him to swap out the policy file for something malicious, and nobody would have caught it in time.

And the weird censorship stuff goes against Lemmy’s and the Fediverse’s ideology and principles as a whole. Like, why are you even here then? That type of thing is why many people left Reddit for Lemmy, to escape the censorship. Ironically, I left Reddit over API changes and not being able to use my favorite Reddit app (RiF), and now the same thing is almost happening all over again… Except now the API changes straight up shadow ban people instead of blocking app access outright. It’s just a different side of the same coin, really. Just stay on Reddit if you want to do this to people.

For someone to pull the same BS again in a place that is supposed to promote inclusiveness for LGBT and many other types of “left-wing” people is wild to me. Many people just want a place they can feel comfortable. Not a good look when things like “epstein” are filtered out. Yikes. The Fediverse needs to remain a free and open place for all.

I’m taking this as an achievement lol cause maybe I’m doing something right if someone is willing to go as far as to hardcode me into their petty little blocklist (that was manually typed out) just to silence me over insignificant things. It’s kinda funny someone is this uptight and would even go to these lengths at all. I’m not that interesting, I promise you.

      Edit: Fixed bad typos

A lot of that domain list is real spam defence. It filters conservatism as well as communism. “It targets the left” doesn’t survive the data and I’m not going to pretend it does.

Based retraction. Credit where it’s due. (Not that you can read this, ironically).
