I came up with the idea for the Maxiform IDU-1 after looking to Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Deployment Unit for inspiration. I’ve studied him a lot, and I like how he thinks about tackling problems.
Fuller didn’t invent an entirely new manufacturing system for his unit. He took the grain-bin industry, which already had the factories, materials, shipping methods, and trained workers in place, and adapted that system into low-cost housing.
I wanted to follow the same basic strategy with something that makes sense today.
Instead of grain bins, the Maxiform IDU-1 uses a common retired 20-foot refrigerated shipping container (they’re called, reefers). These units are already insulated, weatherproof, standardized, and built to survive years of heavy use and transportation.
They can be moved by ordinary container trucks, placed on simple concrete pads, and repaired through an existing industrial network. The smooth insulated shell also saves a lot of labor because the walls, roof, floor, and insulation are already there.
The unit is designed as a compact home for one person. It includes a small bathroom, kitchen, single bed, table, storage, heating and cooling, fresh-air ventilation, and basic water systems. A curved roof cap aids in rain collection, and it has a centered roof ventilator. The exterior planter and water barrel make use of the rain collection gutter system without adding much complexity.
Fuller’s original unit cost about $1,500 in 1941. After accounting for inflation, that’d be around $30,000 today.
That became the target range for this idea. A fully working one-off custom build would probably cost more, but a production run using matching retired containers, identical floor plans, and factory-installed utility packages could come close to that range and maybe even get it even cheaper.
The main advantage is efficiency. The Maxiform IDU-1 doesn’t try to compete with a camper trailer. It’s meant to be a durable, mostly stationary home that can still be moved when needed.
It reuses a large industrial product that already exists, cuts down on construction waste, reduces on-site labor, and provides better insulation than many low-cost RVs or sheds.
For those of you crying about use of AI: How else would I create the concept? I wasn’t going to hire anyone to do it just so I could fucking post on Lemmy. I’m not going to learn to paint just so I could fucking post on Lemmy. My scribbles for the design aren’t as pretty.
This is a perfect use of AI, because it helps me get from concept idea, to image much more quickly. If you wanna take the time to sketch out and paint your design to show off on Lemmy, go for it. But I didn’t want to.
Buckminster Fuller would have used AI if it had been around during his time. I’d prefer following his example, than listen to a bunch of overly political anti-AI Lemmy’s. :)
