I’m curious how people here evaluate “free now, monetized later” software moves. Do you trust Canva making Affinity/Cavalry free, or do you see it mainly as future lock-in?

For me, it depends on whether “free” comes with lasting guarantees. If the file formats stay open, offline use remains available, and existing features aren’t gradually moved behind a subscription, then making software free is a genuine win. But if the long-term plan is to make users dependent on proprietary workflows before tightening the screws, that’s classic lock-in. The real test isn’t the announcement—it’s how the product evolves over the next few years.
