You can use separate urls for the image and the thumbnail when posting.
In this post, the rickroll shows up in the thumbnail already.The client i use sometimes does not animate gif images. I though this was the case until read the bottom text
My client puts a play button in the middle of the image so it was pretty obvious
I mean that the client puts the play icon as it recognises image as gif, but does not animate it sometimes, and shows only the first frame.
