After nearly 20 years on the platform, The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) says it is leaving X. “This isn’t a decision we made lightly, but it might be overdue,” the digital rights group said. “The math hasn’t worked out for a while now.” From the report:

We posted to Twitter (now known as X) five to ten times a day in 2018. Those tweets garnered somewhere between 50 and 100 million impressions per month. By 2024, our 2,500 X posts generated around 2 million impressions each month. Last year, our 1,500 posts earned roughly 13 million impressions for the entire year. To put it bluntly, an X post today receives less than 3% of the views a single tweet delivered seven years ago. […]

When you go online, your rights should go with you. X is no longer where the fight is happening. The platform Musk took over was imperfect but impactful. What exists today is something else: diminished, and increasingly de minimis.

EFF takes on big fights, and we win. We do that by putting our time, skills, and our members’ support where they will effect the most change. Right now, that means Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and eff.org. We hope you follow us there and keep supporting the work we do. Our work protecting digital rights is needed more than ever before, and we’re here to help you take back control.

Honestly wonder if it was due to that interview with Jon Stewart where an EFF representative was basically told that if you’re not on Twitter (X) you’re not relevant to the discussion, effectively. While I don’t agree with that, I think that the EFF not leading by example means it’s hard to argue that other people should leave to bluseky or mastodon.

    but it might be overdue

By at least two years. Better late than never, I guess, but EFF should have been one of the first ones jumping ship to newer, freer options.

EFF should probably be the last one to leave. You wanna reach idiots on Xitter, being on Xitter is the most effective way to do that.

Given their description it sounds like it’s more of an issue of the algorithm and conservation of org resources. Their campaigning there is almost completely ineffective. They’ve been shoved down the list by the likes of Elon and the Rogan “manosphere”.

We should make a resposter account on shitter that posts all EFF mastodon posts. Append the phrase “Resposted from mastodon, please post responses here: [mastodon link]”

Well, yeah, because the fascists that run Shitter hate the EFF and everything it stands for. And they ain’t very subtle about how they were trying to shape the platform into some right-wing white supremacist haven.

Again, this is a predictable turn of events, and they should have left much earlier.

Doesn’t matter if it’s predictable or not, you keep doing it as long as it’s effective.

    Nice!

I finally gave my all-but unused Instagram account the heave-ho last week. Left with a “Am tired of Meta’s enshittification of their sites…” message.

Besides I have a pro account on Flickr, (for a loooong time - from when it was a yahoo property) and that is SO much quieter and friendly since it’s just about photographs.

Yeah, twatter needs to meet a slow, costly, end for Musk.

We’re winning! Keep up the food work everyone. I know the EFF won’t be leaving the Fediverse, so let’s make sure we’re all doing what we can as well!

      They craved the reach.

This is what convinces many people to stay. They desire the attention. And the accounts desperate for attention range from big companies, to small artists.
