The onboarding will offer you a lot of topics to sign up to. These contain communities in them. The idea is to populate subscription feeds, however it can leave some users with a lot of undesired subscriptions if they click too many.
If you wish to roll this back. Go to Settings -> Profile and click the yellow bar. Don’t click the red bar!

Many people prefer smaller images on the home page - go to https://piefed.social/user/settings and try the “More compact” option in the “Compact UI” field.
The other option - “Most compact” - is similar to old.reddit which is nice but not to everyone’s taste.
Also try another theme! Amethyst is a popular one and the HPT themes are nice. Also Card Shadow. The rest are kinda experimental.
