Well originally in the book, the mom just inexplicably gives birth to a mouse after a completely normal pregnancy. Everyone just kinds shrugs like “oh thats weird. Anyway its a boy.”
… im not sure if thats better or worse than the movie adaptation.

I mean even if you somehow want to argue that animal lives are worth less than human lives (good luck with that), this is a fully sentient, speaking animal. Fundamentally he deserves at least as much, if not more, care and priority than a random human kid.
The joke of this comic is basically to say that humans are more important arbitrarily, just because they are human.
To another human yes they’re more important.
