I mean if you read the article, one of them saved for a year or 2 and bought a house (I’m assuming large down payment for a mortgage), one had a “house payment and alimony” (so basically paying half the salary to the ex), one was saving up 90% of income doing this.
These are people who were either striving for FIRE or had other shit happen to them.
Obviously the area is ridiculously expensive, but software engineers make more than enough to live on a single job. If they still have jobs of course.
It sounds ridiculous, yes, but there are US software engineers who basically work for minimum wage full time doing freelance work because that is all they can find
