I would hazard that when you are attempting to do nice things for altruistic reasons, when you get no benefit yourself from it, that serves as a force multiplier for the nicety, but it does not diminish the nicety for doing them for ego-gratification reasons.

A tweak: Doing nice things when there is no apparent benefit for you is evidence that you’re a good person.
