people equating governments (and their symbols) with languages makes me facepalm all the bloody time.
Even though it’s not perfectly accurate it makes it much easier to scan for your own language for the vast majority of users so from a UX standpoint it’s justifiable.

What is your opinion about using a terrible combination of every country’s flag where the language is (officially) spoken?
For German, I like this abomination (ignore the missing Liechtenstein and Belgian representation [you could argue Belgium is already represented if you are color-order-dyslexic]):

Only got around to reading this now but thanks for your perspective, lots of things I never considered that are really inexcusable. That’s what I’m on this site for!
As a Canadian, I never know if I’m supposed to be looking for the Stars and Stripes or Union Jack.
we should have mozambique flag for portuguese, chile flag for spanish, canada flag for english, and austria flag for german. it would be better like that
