I was there! Such an underrated and picturesque town.
It’s always so cool when someone shows up on here who’s been to the place in question. Unironically jealous!
I live like 6mins from there… TIL there’s interest in our little corner ;-)
If you go someday, there’s a fortress and museum on top of the hill with WWI and WWII history, plus you get a view of the city from above. It’s also the hometown of the inventor of the saxophone, so lots of saxophone and jazz references. For example, there are giant saxophone statues lining the bridge in this pic. Also the Leffe original brewery and monastery is here. Worth a day’s visit if ever in Belgium! :)
Haha. Möse.
(/sorry, this one brings out my inner teenager)
I briefly visited Belgium for 2 weeks back in 2014. I went with a big group of people who all wanted to use Belgium as the ‘homebase’ while they traveled to other countries for day trips and such.
My partner and I didn’t know shit about Belgium and decided we were going to spend our entire time exploring and learning. We asked our host family for some suggestions for things to do and they recommended Dinant after I said I wanted to see some castles. They also warned us that people in the south mostly spoke French and didn’t really like English speakers that much.
We planned to go to Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Dinant with Dinant being the first stop on our tour. It was like a 5 hour train ride through some of the most beautiful countryside I’ve ever seen. I remember feeling like I was in a literal painting as I was passing by fields of golden wheat and cottages with legit waterwheels. It was surreal.
Dinant did not disappoint. The people were super nice and welcoming. The food was godlike. The castle and museum were top notch. We liked it so much we stayed for an extra 2 days. Which kinda fucked up our schedule but it was well worth it.
I miss Belgium every day. I miss Ghent and Dinant the most. Best trip I’ve ever had. 10/10 highly recommend.
This is a map in the WW2 tactical shooter Post Scriptum, the beautiful scenery usually make me more interested in exploring the city than playing the game.
Nice pic, I’d personally preferred it had the HDR be toned down a bit.
