Federation Starship Captain.
Nope, wait, I watched The Pitt. I’d be an ER doctor.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How would you survive if, in a few years, the world became like the world from the novel The Road?
1·3 hours agoWatching it again, I was wary because the guy was just telling the kid what he wanted to hear. But when the rest of the family showed up, it looked like they might be okay, but only because they have a dog. I doubt the dog would hang around with people who were cruel to others. Besides, they probably would have eaten the dog by now.
I don’t remember the dog being in the book, so the bleakest interpretation, that the people will turn out to be bad, might work for the book better than the film.

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•US Democrats: proud of deportations
12·4 hours agoYeah, I never understood why these establishment corporate Democrats respond to Republican criticism by acting more like Republicans. Those psychos have big mouths, but that doesn’t mean that what comes out is worthy of attention.
Democrats need to learn to say Shut The Fuck Up and Get The Fuck Out, when MAGAs start whining, NOT listen to them.
I’ve never cared enough to dig up the whole story, but it sounds like Patty was the problem.

2·4 hours agoIt really works! Try it! When it’s too hot under the covers, but too cold to uncover, just stick a foot out from under the covers, and you’ll be a lot more comfortable.
I just wrote about it in a thread asking for life lessons, and I offered this, and it sparked a huge discussion, with a lot of up votes.
For the record, those against the idea weren’t so much worried about a cold foot, they were far more concerned about attacks by monsters, and the occasional cat.
That garden was a masterpiece, I miss it. I eventually started a business, and some hobbies, like sports and gardening, had to step aside to carve out time for the business.
I think I have to tell my favorite bird story.
I used to have a glorious organic garden, and I would work in it almost every day. One day, as I was turning a bed for the next crop, a Robin sat on the edge of another bed watching me. When I stepped back to take a break, he hopped over to where I’d been working, and pulled up a big worm.
I went back to work, and he continued to watch me. Occasionally I’d toss him a worm. After that, he’d show up whenever I’d work, for a free meal.
One day, I got started, and my buddy showed up. He called quietly, in that little warbling chortle that they do, and a female robin hopped out from behind the neighbor’s fence. She spotted me, and became immediately agitated, but he chortled lightly, and she settled down, eyeing me warily.
I got to work, and tossed him a worm, which startled her. He gulped it down as she watched. Then I tossed a worm to her, startling her again, but less. She carefully approached the worm and ate. After that she settled down, and enjoyed her dinner
My Robin friend had gone out and got himself a date, and brought her to his favorite restaurant, where he’s friends with the head chef. What a BALLER move!
Nah, Clapton treated her bad because he’s shit person. A great guitarist, but a shit person.

World News@lemmy.ml•what the US is doing to Cuba right now is one of the most barbaric crimes in its history.
211·6 hours agoI don’t know about that. Genocides don’t usually take 80 years, as the population grows. I don’t think that fits the description.

4·6 hours agoI like your thinking. Also slingshots and ball bearings. One of those to the face will slow you down. David and Goliath time.
And don’t forget your videogame lessons. Pick up any loot your victims drop. Lots of good guns, ammo, and body armor.
Stay in the shadows, brother.

1·6 hours agoIt’s a scam. They didn’t get rich allowing some other rich guy to claim the excess value of their labor. They accumulated their own value, and grew their own wealth, not someone else’s.
You won’t get rich working for someone else. They will.

1·6 hours agoThey’ve desperately tried to paint her as stupid, but they have literally no evidence of it, and when you look at her education, you realize that she’s one of the most intelligent people in our government. Way back in high school she was a finalist in a National Intel Science Competition. That was before she double majored in college and was Magna Cum Laude. She’s definitely not stupid.
So now they are trying to paint her as a corrupt millionaire who has been using her office to enrich herself, which is hilarious coming from MAGA, but also easily demonstrably untrue. She’s still paying off student loan debt.
Their stuff stuck to Hilary because even though they were all lies, she was something of the calculating political animal that they painted her to be, even though the same could be easily said about her detractors. It’s not working for AOC, because people see her for who she really is.

3·6 hours agoThis was AOC’s first Congressional appearance on the national stage, as she questioned Michael Cohen about Trump’s business dealings. Cohen had taken a plea deal, and was going to prison, but he wanted to tell his story in Congress, in front of the American people.
Unfortunately, several Reps wasted their time as they usually do, posturing and propagandizing, and saying and accomplishing nothing. Cohen had been asked about little of substance, and you could tell he was getting frustrated.
Then AOC’s turn came, and she was ready. This was her first national appearance, but it didn’t look like it. She was confident and determined. She warned Cohen that she might move fast, and she took off. She launched into a fast series of precise questions about values of specific properties, and Cohen fired back just as quickly with answers, as well as those in Tumps office who handled those issues.
By the time she was done, in less than five minutes, she had uncovered enough actionable material, under oath, that it formed the core of Leticia James’ 34 successful felony convictions against him. It was a remarkable political performance, one of the best I’ve seen in my lifetime.
That was the FIRST thing she did in Congress. She’s EXACTLY what we need. I’ll vote for her for anything. I’d love her to be President.
The people rebuilding the Death Star weren’t combatants.
WTF? Of course they are.
Nah, I never forgave Anakin for killing the younglings. He doesn’t come back from that. Period.
You should watch them with my son, the film studies major. I try to discuss that cool violent scene, and he wants to discuss the existential nature of the antagonist’s motivation or something.

9·7 hours agoA sheet, a light blanket, a knitted afghan, and a heavy blanket, and that will hold in all the heat you need. The pockets in the knitted afghan trap your body heat really well, and the blankets hold it there. Works amazingly well.
It works so well, that sometimes I have to stick a foot out from under the covers to radiate excess body heat.

Absolutely. Just like these tariffs. When the tariffs are eventually removed, will we see lower prices in the retail stores? Here and there, maybe, but generally, this will be the new price baseline. And the saving from the tariffs will just go to the corporate profits, not to lower prices, or even higher wages, just bigger executive bonuses.
