You’re not ceding language by acknowledging differences.

The bigots use the language to conflate trans women and cis men, to suggest that they’re really the same. They use that language to shape the understanding of people who don’t know any better. And those people absolutely impact your life, because it’s those people voting for transphobia to “keep women safe” because they see you and I as being just as dangerous as cis men, because language like that shapes their understanding.

Your relationship with that socialisation was very different to mine. We both experienced similar pressures and expectations, and we both received similar privileges based on the way people perceived us, but our lived experience of that was very different.

An analogy is a closeted gay man that has to marry a woman and have kids due to social pressure. He receives many of the privileges of being straight, but it comes at the cost of himself. Calling that straight privilege erases that cost to him, and the price he had to pay by faking a role that wasn’t his.

Nuance is important, and some privileges are real. But being forced to be perceived as someone that you aren’t is not a privilege, and that shouldn’t be ignored.

I don’t see that as some permanent Mark of Cain upon my soul.

The bigots do. It’s literally how they use the term, and why they deliberately erase any nuance from discussions on the subject, and it’s also why you should be careful to not do the same

Neopronoun folk don’t need to be told the excuses. They live it every day. A thread where someone asking for support dealing with lack of acceptance from other folk, is not the place for those very folk to come in and list the reasons why that acceptance is just too hard for them.

This is a trans community where a trans person asked other trans people about an issue that impacts trans people.

It’s not the thread for an ally to come in and tell trans people they’ll just need to live with it, even if they do so politely.

A remote user that is banned from this instance will also be banned from the communities on this instance, and those community bans federate, so they can’t interact with remote versions of the community.

They can still see the content in the community though. I think there is a gap around communities that they had never interacted with. They can’t subscribe to those communities because of the instance ban, but I think in theory they can still post to them, but that content will only be visible on their remote instance. I’m not certain of the details of this particular edge case though…

Could I make a feature request that would make my life as an admin much easier? Would it be possible to add links to the local URL, the canonical URL and a lemmy redirector like lemmyverse.link in the share button for posts and comments?

When trying to deal with spammers etc and sharing content with other admins, it’s currently quite difficult to expose a URL that the remote admin can use

As long as you can accept that many people don’t want to see Potter memes and can accept a little pushback, you’ll be doing better than most folk.

They’re also front ends. They don’t give you a single universal fediverse account that crosses fediverse platforms

Keeping her relevant in popular culture is supporting her financially, politically and socially, because her relevance influences both her wealth and her political clout.

And I’m going to pushback against that. In this case, it was a single line snarky comment that referenced the meme in question. In response, I got 5 or so responses from people, each of them multi paragraph long, insisting on telling me just how it’s actually ok to post Rowling stuff.

And from my perspective, if you’re ok enough with Rowling to not say anything when a Rowling meme is posted, you should also be ok enough with someone posting a snarky one liner in pushback against it.

But if folk are ok with a meme that entrenches the relevance of a virulent transphobe, but a snarky response to that meme warrants a multi paragraph response, then it might be time to re-evaluate priorities…

If it were against the rules, I’d have reported it.

Instead, I made a snarky comment, because even though it’s not against the rules, the less Rowling in the world, the better.
